From Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, – Frank Shiner is a man of many means which have taken him through everything from law studies to acting in over sixty play and television productions. His latest album is entitled; Lonely Town, Lonely Street – an album of great covers he does justice to in his own right, which has also garnered seven Grammy Considerations.

He also has a Christmas song currently out that’s playing in Macy’s, Bloomingdales and Kohls this holiday season, both of which feature in this review, starting with his rendition of “Please Come Home For Christmas,” the 1960 classic by Charles Brown. Also featured on the album is award winning female vocalist Leslie Mendelson.

This can be classified as Pop, but it comes out more on the Adult-Contemporary- Blue eyed soul side. Shiner puts his own stamp on it without simply doing a carbon copy, and that takes more risk on a holiday tune for sure, but he works out with a truly soulful twist, and the sax solo tops it off with just the right touch of jazz.

He managed to record a world class cover and put his own special sauce on it. I can hear this being just as fit for radio as the shopping stores playing it this season, no question about it. He delivers with a maximum effort to seamlessly smooth out a traditional track, backed by musical perfection.

Lonely Town, Lonely Street kicks off with his take on “How Can I Be Sure” by The Young Rascals, and the first thing noticed is how much he makes a track his own without losing a step on the song in the process. In-fact he adds so much of his own character to it that you don’t think much about comparing it to the original, instead you feel like it extends the original somehow, and that’s not easy to do, but Shiner nails it.

This fine rendition is followed-by an amazing studio performance of Donny Hathaway’s cover of “I Love You More Than You’ll Ever Know.” This is another amazing cover with Shiner matching Hathaway’s top notes.

Frank Shiner Highlights His Voice With Great Covers

Anyone partaking in this album is in for a ride indeed, with covers like the epic Hall & Oats hit “She’s Gone” with its bluesy version giving it something to write home about. He does stick a little bit to the original, but you can tell it’s a matter of respect to such a big hit that everyone knows. But everyone also knows how good Hall’s singing voice is too.

Once again, Shiner magically works it out without going too far to change a classic. He keeps it coming all the same with a sweet version of Joe White penned “Rainy Night In Georgia” and then some smoking blues guitar is featured on Randy Newman’s “Guilty.”

“Lonely Town, Lonely Street” is where Frank Shiner and Bill Withers meet with jubilance on the title track which puts the Shiner stamp on this R&B cut with the utmost care in preserving it while adding the-right little spin. The whole album is a sensational experience to behold, with more covers turning out great new takes.

“Drink You Away” by Justin Timberlake is another example, which actually-put me onto the original song which I had never heard. That’s just some of the magic Shiner weaves throughout these transplanted roots. It comes recommended along with the Christmas track, for all to appreciate.

Original Article

Lonely Town, Lonely Street by Frank Shiner, is the title is his album of covers that also includes his version of the Bill Wither’s song, along with ten other superb versions of what are mostly R&B style numbers he puts a lot of his own blues into. The album must be heard to fully appreciate what he brings to the songs of yesteryear. The album is under consideration for 7 Grammy’s. And to top it off with the bells and whistles, Frank also has a new Christmas cover out which will be heard playing at Macy’s, Bloomingdales, and Kohls this holiday season. Both are an earful of homage to some great artists and the spirit of popular music.

“Please Come Home For Christmas,” written by Charles Brown, released in 1960, is universally well-known but Frank Shiner modernizes it with just the right amount of his own musical prowess. The whole track is kicked up a notch, but in the most graceful way to put his own signature in the right places. That’s what Frank Shiner possesses a strong ability to do on whatever he covers.

He re-makes a song in a way that keeps it grounded but also takes it to new heights. This is everything a Christmas song should be and more, now that it’s under in his hands. A vibrant, delightful version of his own, is the result.

The album centers around Shiner’s ability to swing up his own tight versions by adding loads of soul and a fair amount of blues to them. It’s a set of songs that are somehow in his wheelhouse as if made for him to put his heart into and come up with a winning collection of covers. His background is in acting, so he brings a dramatic feel that transforms some of these songs to deeper levels.

It’s never easy to surpass originals, but they can be equaled if you do them justice, and he does that by freshening them up as he does so well. They’re given just the right amount of sparkle to shine in a new way.

“How Can I Be Sure” by The Young Rascals, gets the disc up and running with an absolutely-exquisite version of what is a favorite by so many of its generation, and it sticks to the pattern like new here. If you can imagine any soul artist doing this, it’s a good way to describe how he cuts his own on such a mythically known piece of work. I was reminded of Percy Sledge the first time I heard it, and that might even describe it best. Either way he can’t lose after opening with such brilliance. The rest is a gravy train once you get used to these new versions he’s recorded. And it never lets up as the album keeps swinging out killer covers.

SOUNDCLOUD: https://soundcloud.com/frankshinermusic/please-come-home-for-christmas,

The title cut pays a great dedication to Bill Withers, as it sits just past the middle of the track list, right where it belongs. But the tracks all even out with a clearly well-mixed sound, so it plays just as well skipping around as it does in succession. A cover of Hall & Oats’ “She’s Gone” meets the standard with flying colors, and it probably follows closest to the original as anything on the album.

To give it all that’s worth noting, some of the album’s best work includes award winning female vocalist, Leslie Mendelson on Sam & Dave’s “When Something Is Wrong With My Baby” and included even more on Van Morrison’s “I Will Be There”

There’s something transcendent about a Frank Shiner performance, an element that goes beyond a gifted artist connecting with his audience. It’s bigger than that. Deeper.

To find where this soul-driven passion comes from, we need to spin the clock backward a bit to when a younger Frank was traveling down a path that could have made him a star in musical theater. Back to a moment when, while he was busy making other plans, life happened. Being who he is, Frank happily left his dreams behind to start a family. And everything was right.

Until his wife, Suzanne, got sick.

When a tumor is estrogen receptor-negative, progesterone receptor-negative, and HER2-negative, it is called triple-negative breast cancer. It is aggressive and not a good candidate for hormonal therapy or Herceptin. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy as well as newer treatments are most often the best options for these patients.

“It was radiation and it was chemo. It was infections and it was MRSA. It was 22 days in the hospital at a time and it was almost dying! I mean, it was four and a half years of, ‘Are you kidding me?!’” Frank recalled.

One night, at a restaurant, Suzanne began begging her husband to get up on stage and perform for her. When he refused, she pulled back her wig to show him her bald head and pleaded with him to take the stage.

Realizing he couldn’t say no — “She pulled the cancer card on me!” — Frank reluctantly took the stage. The crowd loved him, and that reaction, to his wife’s delight, catalyzed the artist’s reentry into the world of performing.

In the years following that fateful night, not only has Suzanne been given a clean bill of health, but Frank’s career has been on a steady climb. In 2014, he released The Real Me. Just last month, Lonely Town, Lonely Street(RED/Sony) came out.

On May 20, Entertaining Options was invited to attend the Philadelphia release party of Frank’s latest album in the upstairs lounge at the iconic World Cafe Live. The velvet throated, blue-eyed crooner was backed by two phenomenal musicians, Chris Coogan on keyboards (Bette Midler, Donna Summer, Paul Newman) and Sherrod Barnes on guitar (Whitney Houston, Ashanti, Roberta Flack).

Frank Shiner has a classic voice that blazes with the swoon-worthy soul of a master. Other artists might cover songs written by legends such as Tony Joe White, Van Morrison, Amy Winehouse, Randy Newman, Daryl Hall, and John Oats, but when Frank sings them, it sounds like these classic tracks were tailor-made for his golden ember vocals.

Some arrangements of the beloved tunes he sings (“She’s Gone,” “Guilty,” “I Will Be There”) stay comfortably close to the familiar versions, but where Shiner shines is in the gentle re-sculpting of timeless hits. The delicate spin he puts on The Young Rascals’ “How Can I Be Sure” is rapturous. And the wrecking ball he takes to Timberlake’s “Drink You Away,” so he can rebuild it from the ground up, is just mind-blowing.

In between his pin-drop performances, Frank chats with the audience in a refreshing way that is remarkably different from other entertainers. His behind-the-songs stories are infused with a genuine sense of wonder. It’s as if he still can’t believe this is his life and he is humbled by the attention and grateful to each and every member of the audience for his or her support.

And then there’s that aforementioned transcendent element. Likely, it’s not something the artist is fully in control of. It just happens. The magic at a Frank Shiner show is actually created by his wife. Watching her watching him, you can see the joy radiating from her heart and spilling out through her eyes. Her love fuels him and makes him reach deeper to return it to her (and the rest of the crowd) in song. On May 20, nowhere was that love more evident than when Frank dedicated the title track of his debut album, “The Real Me,” to his wife. As he sang, the room fell away leaving just two people lost in a beautiful moment.

When Frank Shiner sings, it’s not for himself, it’s for the woman who encouraged him to pursue his dreams. When he sings, it comes from a place of love.

Frank and Suzanne have three kids, Matthew (28), Jeremy (26), and Lindsey (17). Like her father, Lindsey also sings and writes songs. Currently, she is going college for drama.

Frank’s next performance is on July 8 at Feinstein’s 54 Below in New York City. Tickets for his 9:30 p.m. show are available Here.

Frank Shiner and his wife, Suzanne, have restored two 100-year-old homes since moving to Westchester. The first was in New Rochelle–built in 1906 –and the second in Chappaqua–built around 1912–which he and his wife have called home since 2003. The couple has three children: Matthew, 28; Jeremey, 26; and Lindsay, 17.

Since moving in, they have restored or replaced lighting fixtures with period pieces, resurfaced the wood–while preserving a “historic patina,” and, of course, restored the original pool.

“We bought dilapidated places and brought them back to what they were originally,” said Shiner, who is involved in the New Castle Historical Society.

In front of their home was a live-in cottage, which Frank has converted into a garage and his own rehearsal space. The award-winning singer and recording artist practices there before shows, where he performs some of his favorite songs. But, he is quick to point out, “I don’t do covers.” “I put another spin on it, or make people think about it a different way,” he said.

Randy Radic, who reviews music for Huffpost.com, agrees. In addition to declaring, “the man can sing,” Radic says, “you’d be hard pressed to say who did the original. And who cares anyway, because Shiner’s rendition is so darn good.”

His recent shows, which included one at the Chappaqua Performing Arts Center April 22, featured songs from his new album, Lonely Town, Lonely Street.

The 12-track album dropped May 19 and features his reimagined versions of R&B, jazz and blues classics popularized by artists like Elton John, The Rascals and Donny Hathaway. The Doc Pomus song “There Is Always One More Time” is both the last song on the album and at shows because, he says, it drives home the message that it’s never too late.

“People walk out of there feeling like anything’s possible,” the “Blue-Eyed Soul” singer said.

Originally, Frank was an up-and-coming actor in New York City, earning roles in soap operas and theater. He was doing well, but not making enough to support his wife and son. When his second son, Jeremy, was born, he decided to give it all up and take a sales job.

“I was like, ‘OK, I’ve got a baby, one on the way, a mortgage. I can’t be this selfish and do this any longer,’” he said.

In 1995 he started his own business managing payments for doctor’s offices, which today has 130 employees nation wide. He never thought he would perform again, until one night in 2011 when the couple stopped in for a bite at the since closed 353 Restaurant in Bedford. “They had an open mic night,” Frank said. “I hadn’t sung in front of people in 12, 15 years, and Suzanne said, ‘get up and sing me a song.’”

Frank tried to say no. But, Suzanne, who was going through chemotherapy for triple-negative breast cancer, “literally cried and pulled her wig back and showed me the bald head,” Frank said. “She played me pretty good.”

He then got up and sang and, “had a little bit of fun.”

The bandleader asked him to sing another song, and then a third. After that, Frank ran out of songs he knew well enough, which he said was the only reason he got off stage.

“It meant a lot to me, because I felt like he wasn’t himself for so long for us, to give us this amazing life,” Suzanne said, looking up with her glassy blue eyes as if watching Frank take the stage all over again. “It was like it never left him.”

Afterward, the bandleader running the open mic asked him to join his orchestra. For the second time that night, Frank unsuccessfully declined an offer.

“I didn’t want to do it, he said. “I just wanted to be with [Suzanne] and support her through the illness. She insisted.”

Suzanne’s battle with breast cancer spanned what Frank calls “five years of hell” and multiple complications. She had 12 surgeries all together. Today she is cancer free.

“Anything I have ever done she has inspired,” Frank said, calling the dancer from Arkansas “the best woman I know.”

From there the businessman made music his career–while keeping his day job. He performed with the orchestra, and everywhere else he could until he caught the eye of his now manager, Ken Levy. “It was like, ‘Bam,’ we went right into production,” Frank said.

His first album, appropriately titled “The Real Me,” was released in 2014 and picked up by Universal Records. Through songs by Van Morrison, Randy Newman and Elvis Costello, he told the story of putting his dreams on hold to raise his family, and then coming back to it.

“The message was, ‘who is the real you?’” he said.

On his new album, every song is about love, which Frank said he didn’t notice until he started recording.

“I don’t believe in coincidence,” Frank said. “Something happened at that open mic night… It was almost like the world or god was saying, ‘job well done, and now you guys need some healing.”

After a deep breathe to exhale the emotion, the Blue-Eyed Soul singer picked his head back up, locked eyes with his blue-eyed bride, and continued.

“Music has been so healing, I cannot tell you. It’s totally changed our lives.”

And with another change coming–their youngest, Lindsay, going to college in the fall–the soon-to-be empty nesters are looking forward to the next chapter. Suzanne wants to take tap dance and yoga classes, and both want to travel. Frank may even try to perform while abroad. The resurgent singer also wants to, like his home, return to what he was originally. “I want to do Broadway musicals,” he said.

Frank Shiner met his wife, Suzanne, in an acting class in Manhattan.
And Frank is taking steps toward picking up where he left off nearly 30 years ago, when he was cast in a “Broadway-bound” musical scored by country music superstar Garth Brooks–support fell through for it when Brooks dropped out. Frank has tasked his agent with starting the process of getting him in front of agents, and he said he may just sing some Broadway songs at his upcoming show at Feinstein’s 54 Below in Manhattan, scheduled for July 8.

“We’re just going to do a lot of things we haven’t been able to do for a long time–find ourselves again,” Suzanne said.

Shiner is promoting his new album “Lonely Town, Lonely Street” and he never gets tired of seeing familiar faces in the crowd. Shiner may have moved to the Big Apple to pursue his dream in music, but his hometown never leaves his side. His high school friends from Bishop Hoban and his friends from King’s College never miss a show.

“They have always made a real effort to come out and see me,” Shiner said. “For the last show at the Cutting Room (in New York City) Joe Malloy, who I went to Bishop Hoban with with… he arranged a bus trip out for a flat fee. He’s doing the same for my next show at Feinstein’s/54 Below on Saturday, July 8.”

Q: How do you feel about how the hometown support?

Frank Shiner: You always feel tied to home in a very good way. It’s not just my friends and family, it’s people that just know you’re from the area, and they seem to light up over it… The media here has just really seemed to embrace the whole hometown boy project.

Q: How did you get involved in music?

FS: I was heavily involved in music in high school and I was a theater major at King’s College. However, when I first went to college I was a goverment and pre-law major. I almost went out of my mind within a month and I knew it wasn’t for me. So, the guidance counselor there told me, ‘follow your heart.’ That was probably the best advice anyone’s ever given me. And I walked right down the hall and I changed my major to theater with Carl Wagner at the theater department and never looked back.

Q: You came back to the music scene about eight years ago, why was that?

FS: I moved to the city and pursued my dream, and I knew that I was supposed to be in theater and music. But, I took a hiatus when I started raising my family because I realized I needed to bring in more money. So, I went into business and then I came back to it. I came back to it through an illness when my wife got diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer. We were coming from chemo and stopped to get a bite to eat at restaurant. They were randomly having an open mic night and my wife really pushed me to go up and sing for her. It wasn’t until she said, ‘Go do this, I’m going through hell and I need this.’ So, I got up and sang. I ended up singing one song, then two songs, then three songs. The band leader offered me a job and three months later after I finally said yes, the rest is history. It is kind of fate that brought it all back.

Q: What do you remember about your first time performing in public?

FS: My first big time was when I played Henry Higgins in “My Fair Lady” on the stage at Bishop Hoban High School. I was absolutely scared to death. It was my first real show that I was in as a senior and I had the lead. I rehearsed the whole summer, but when I heard the anger and felt the energy of the audience. When I heard them laugh when they were supposed to laugh and gasp when they were supposed to gasp; and I realized that they were with me. It was an absolutely incredible feeling. I just knew at that moment that I had to have more of that. I guess I have been reaching for that ever since.

Q: How do choose the songs for your album?

FS: I like to use the word “reinterpretation.” The best compliment I get is when someone comes up to me and says, ‘You know I never really thought about that lyric until I heard you do your version.’ I actually have more passion in reinterpreting a song than I do about writing my own. First and foremost, the lyric has to speak to me. It has to relate to something in my life or something I understand or some emotion that I get. If it doesn’t do that, I pass on the song. Secondly, even if the lyric hits me but there is no opportunity to make it different in someway, then I will pass on it too.

Q: How have you changed as a musician over the years?

FS: I think as you mature and you have life experiences, not just happiness but tragedies, it deepens you as a person and you feel more. I think before I was 30-35 years old, I barely shed a tear. I was worried, asking myself ‘Was I shallow? Why are things not hitting me?’ I think you don’t appreciate life and how delicate it is and how fleeting it is, but as the years go by you start to build an appreciation and feel more and you start to get more passion and more empathy. So, now I feel more. And I don’t care what your art is, when you feel more, it translate to the art. My inner feelings and my heart and soul can freely pour into the music now and it takes on a different character.

Q: What are some of your favorite memories as a musician?

FS: The interactions with the musicians on stage and interactions with the audience. I love the whole live performance aspect. Even in the studio with this album, I insisted on the musicians and back-up singers being there that day and us being able to see each other and interact with each other, and there is an energy to the album that is there because of that.

Q: Who has influenced you over the years?

FS: A very difficult question because everybody. People ask what my playlist is or who I listen to and I don’t have one. I go on a streaming service and I put on a genre and I listen to that genre for the day, so literally everybody. The obvious ones are the old time crooners, Sinatra, Bobby Darin, Peter Frampton, Hall & Oates and then Michael Buble and Amy Winehouse. Just everybody because there is always something there that you use somewhere.

Q: What is the biggest challenge as a musician over the years?

FS: The challenge that musicians share with me is that they end up phoning it in. I don’t have that, I am actually too excited. I have to hold myself back. The biggest challenge for me is to keep it calm. Tone it down and let it be.

Q: What are your future goals?

FS: To play more live shows, at least a national tour if not beyond and another album. I am already thinking about what that might be. But really I just want to do more and more live shows because it is such an exciting process and very rewarding.

“I decided to do blue-eyed soul’ for my second album,” explains the New York resident, using a term that was first coined by renowned black radio personality Georgie Woods in the mid- ‘60s when referencing The Righteous Brothers.“ I’ve always been intrigued by and loved the genre which has really morphed into including artists like my heroes Hall & Oates, Amy Winehouse and others.

Indeed, this latest album showcases Frank’s artistry as an interpreter of timeless material delivered with heart and from the soul.
Learn more about Frank in the following All Access interview:

Where does this interview find you today? Is there music playing in the background? If so, what is it?

Today I’m preparing for my May 20th debut at World Café Live in Philadelphia. The album releases the day before the show! It’s an important show for me. I am laying out the set list and lining up the musicians, equipment, stage plot etc. I have Pandora streaming in the background… Generally I am streaming soul music but today I happened to be streaming blues/rock. I love influence from all genres.

Growing up, did you always want to be a musician? Can you recall your earliest musical memory? Could you see yourself doing anything else today?

Growing up in Mountaintop Pennsylvania, I didn’t have a whole lot of exposure to music at a young age. But I had the advantage of being very bored and needing to occupy my time. I would make up melodies and rhythms regularly to occupy myself. I still remember the ones I made up. I found old Frank Sinatra albums of my father’s and would put them on the turntable and practically wear through the grooves playing them over and over. Then I managed to get my hands on a “Frampton Comes Alive” album and I think I actually did wear that one out.

So my musical influence was very wide and varied.

Let’s talk about your sophomore album, “Lonely Town, Lonely Street.” What was it like putting this collection together? Did anything at all surprise you about the process? How do you think you have grown as a musician on this album and compared to your previous one, “The Real Me”?

The process of making this album has been incredibly fulfilling. I don’t know how to explain how I have improved as a musician except to say that, with every year of life that passes, and every experience good and bad, I seem to be able to feel more emotion and find more emotion in the music. It is in that expression that I have grown. Surprises? There were a number of them… But the biggest surprise was, during the recording process, I suddenly realized that every single song on the album had to do with “love”… They are certainly not all love songs however. It was love including the good and the bad. I even wrote my live show around a love theme because of that.

How did you go about selecting the songs to re-imagine on this album? Was it difficult to narrow them down? Are there some songs that didn’t make it onto the album that you hope to use on a future collection?

My A&R person was Mitchell Cohen. He was head of A&R for Arista Records, Verve Records, and Columbia Records… I always refer to him as “the walking encyclopedia of music.” He sent upwards of 100 songs. I simply listened and listened. I found the songs that spoke to me, lyrically and then I looked at them musically to see if I could do anything interesting with them.

Yes I found a number of other songs that didn’t make it on the album but my guess is they will make it into a live show for sure!

I saw on your Facebook page that you recently received praise from Tony Joe White about your version of his song, “Rainy Night In Georgia.” What did that mean to you to hear from him about it?

Let me tell you something… It’s an honor and a privilege to re-interpret a beautifully written song. My goal is to always do the song justice. I never feel like I’m trying to make the song “better”… Just “different”… and put my own spin on it. You never know how the original artist will feel about it. To hear from somebody of the caliber of Tony Joe White was a milestone in my career and a day I will never forget. And now, to add to that, Gene Cornish, one of the original founders of the Young Rascals heard my version of “How Can I be Sure” and he liked it so much that he came to one of our shows and got on stage and played with us! He said “Frank’s version of our song is very special to me.” An artist lives for moments like that and I just got two in a row! Yes, I’m still pinching myself.

I’d love to more about what it was like returning to music after your wife’s battle with cancer? How do you think that influenced you as an artist and performer?

The horrible experience of helping somebody you love survive cancer is a learning moment. I will never forget the feeling of wishing I could take it away and live through it for her. Also, watching and being sensitive to how it affected my 10-year-old daughter at the time tends to really deepen you as a person and makes you look at life very differently. And it makes you appreciate the good things in life. With any art form… that type of struggle will spill over into your art.

Do you have any upcoming tour dates planned? Do you have any bucket list venues that you would love to play at? Where are they?

If I made a list of venues I would love to play we would be here all day! We are just in the beginning stages of planning a tour. I’m playing World Café Live in Philadelphia on May 20 and the beautiful Feinstein’s 54 Below in New York City on July 8th. This will be my fourth show there and I always love to play that venue. I just did a show at The Cutting Room in New York City and we sold out! And then I did the Chappaqua Performing Arts Center and we had over 400 people in a packed theater. The live show is getting tremendous reactions from the audience. I could not be happier.

What do you consider your favorite live performance to date? What do you think makes the best kind of show for you?

So many of the shows are memorable but the last one at The Cutting Room when Gene Cornish joined us on stage is absolutely a stand out. A responsive audience is the best experience for a performer. I believe I have the best audiences ever.

At the end of the day, what do you hope is the message of your music? What do you hope people take away from your songs?

My shows always seem to have a message of “you can do anything”… “Follow your dreams”… They deal with reconciliation and hope for the future. Even the sad songs, when placed in the context of the rest of the show, give people hope for the future. It’s a tough world out there… If I can inspire someone with even a shred of hope, then I have done my job.

Is there anything else that you would like to share with our readers about yourself or your music?

I would just like them to know that I am a purist. I deal with real human feelings… real emotions… And most importantly, real music. I don’t like all the artificial techniques to make somebody sound different than the instrument with which they were born. Like the title of my first album, I want them to know that they are seeing and hearing “The Real Me.”
